Description

Central MudminnowUmbra limi – to 4″ (10.16 cm)

The native range of this species in the wild is primarily the northeastern quarter of the continental U.S., as well as bordering regions of Canada.  There, they are found in marshy, slackwater areas of water bodies of just about any size.  They are generally found in association with moderate to thick vegetation.

In the aquarium, they are not shy, but they are retiring and methodical in their movements.  These fish can be kept as community fishes with just about any other fishes of similar size, but an interesting fact about these guys is that they are predators!  They are constantly on the lookout for small prey items, and will “point” to the small prey items before they strike, in a similar manner as a pike or musky would!  It is very interesting to watch them hunt their food!

Great community fishes, they are not aggressive.  They can be kept in groups ranging from all males to all females, and any combination in between!  They can also be kept peacefully with just about any other fish in the aquarium, including: darters, small catfish, other minnows and many, many tropical and cool-water aquarium fishes!
