Description

Golden ShinerNotemigonus crysoleucas – to 12″ (30.48 cm)

The native range of this species in the wild is primarily the eastern two-thirds of the United States and Canada.  There, they are found in rivers and streams, lakes and ponds, and generally in association with aquatic vegetation.

In the aquarium, they can be a little skittish, until they get accustomed to seeing their keeper(s).  Topping out at 12 inches (30.48 cm) in length, these are one of the larger minnow species found in Wisconsin.

Great community fishes, they are not aggressive and will frequently school with other fishes.  Even those much smaller than they are.  They can be kept in groups ranging from all males to all females, and any combination in between!  They can also be kept peacefully with just about any other fish in the aquarium, including: darters, small catfish, other minnows and many, many tropical and cool-water aquarium fishes!
